Setting your Buffer Time

Learn how to set a Buffer Time for direct booking.

Updated over one month ago

Buffer Time is the built‑in gap added before and after your appointments. It ensures you have enough time to transition between sessions so one appointment doesn’t begin immediately after another. Setting an appropriate buffer helps keep your schedule running smoothly, reduces stress, and accounts for unexpected delays—such as patient tardiness or sessions that run slightly over.

How to Set Your Buffer Time

You can adjust your Buffer Time at any point:

Dashboard → Settings → Advanced Booking

Once set, your chosen Buffer Time will automatically apply across all services.

What to Consider When Choosing a Buffer Time

Selecting the right Buffer Time can significantly improve the reliability and sustainability of your practice. Here are key factors to keep in mind:

  • Practice Location. If your clinic is in a rural or harder‑to‑reach area, consider adding extra time between appointments. This helps accommodate patients who may need longer to arrive and reduces the likelihood of back‑to‑back delays.
  • Flexible Appointment Lengths. If your sessions often vary in duration or occasionally require additional time, a longer buffer can give you the flexibility you need without disrupting the rest of your schedule.
  • Patient Needs and Appointment Type. Some services naturally require more time for preparation or cleanup. If you offer treatments that involve equipment setup, sanitation, or post‑session documentation, consider adding extra buffer time to accommodate these tasks without feeling rushed.

Buffer Time for Mobile Providers

Mobile providers using Materia+—especially those who allow direct patient booking—should set a buffer that includes realistic travel time between appointments. Because travel can be unpredictable, mobile practitioners typically benefit from longer buffer periods to ensure punctuality and reduce scheduling stress.
